The last GTR

Nissan Motor Co. announced on 26 January that it has discontinued production of the Nissan GT-R, a high-performance sports car. The name “GT-R” will disappear from production for the first time in 18 years due to difficulties in meeting regulations and procuring parts.

On the same day, production of the last car was completed at the Tochigi plant (Kamisangawa-machi, Tochigi Prefecture). The last car was a special edition in a colour called “Midnight Purple”, which will be delivered to customers in Japan. President Ivan Espinosa commented that ‘at the moment the exact plans have not been confirmed, but the GT-R will evolve and reappear’, hinting at a revival.

The name “GT-R” originated as a racing version of the Skyline, launched in 1969. It was later launched in 2007 as the Nissan GT-R, a different model from the Skyline, as a global strategic car specialising in driving.

The car has been positioned as one of the famous cars that symbolise “Nissan of technology” due to its high driving performance and commitment, and has been loved by fans in Japan and abroad. It has been active in motor sports, winning the Super GT automobile race multiple times, and was also the focus of attention as one of the main features of the management restructuring plan promoted by former Chairman Carlos Ghosn.

The Tochigi plant has been responsible for the assembly of all vehicles. 48,000 cars were produced over an 18-year period.
